I ran my pencil lightly over the page, shading SuperGhost’s jaw. It was getting dark in my room, so I got up and switched on the light. Then I sat cross-legged on my bed, studying the drawing I’d been working on since dinner.

“Maybe SuperGhost needs a sidekick,” I murmured, touching my pencil to the page again. I’d decided against the Pegasus wings, but now his back looked empty. I started drawing a rider that looked like Logan, but then I shook my head and erased. I didn’t want to copy The Boy Next Door. This was my thing, and it needed to be totally original.

My pencil started moving again, almost with a will of its own. Before I knew it, I’d sketched in a girl rider. She had short, dark hair and a ski-jump nose, just like me.

I sat back and studied the image of me riding SuperGhost. I wonder if riding is as fun as Logan makes it look, I thought.

My phone buzzed. It was a text from Blue, saying that she loved the bear sketch and asking how things were going. A second later, a text from Johari popped up, too, just saying Ditto.

My thumbs flew over the tiny keypad as I filled them in. I explained the bombproofing thing—Logan had asked me to help by setting out different weird stuff, like a tarp on the ground and a plastic bag fluttering from a fence post. Then he rode Ghost around, convincing him to get closer and closer to each scary object.

My blue outfit was kind of warm for summer, so I eventually took off my hat and bracelets and rolled the leggings up into shorts. It looked kind of weird, but Logan didn’t seem to notice.

He also didn’t notice my attempts at flirting. At least not in a good way. I typed out to my friends:

Em&Em said to laugh at everything he says and keep tons of eye contact. I tried, but after a while, he looked at me like I had an extra head or something!

OoooO, Johari texted back. Sorry, forgot to talk to sis but will soon!

Ya, Blue added. Sorry u had a bad day!!

Tx, I replied. But actually, it was mostly good. Ghost kicked butt with the bombproofing stuff. He’s super brave! I think even L was impressed. He let me feed Ghost two whole apples at the end lol!

Too bad u can’t ride him back to Philly for the block party, Johari replied. He could be in the pet parade!

Haha too bad, I texted back.
